Overweight Permit Information
Information and Instructions for Annual Overweight Permit
Operators of vehicles that regularly cross New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA) bridges in excess of the posted weight limit may wish to apply for an Annual Overweight Permit.
In order to apply for this permit, owners/operators must have a valid E-ZPass account.
Benefits of an Annual Overweight Permit
Permit holders do not need cash at the toll plaza and are not required to give advance notice of intended bridge crossing (unless over-width). The $25.00 per crossing fee will be invoiced monthly and the axle toll will be billed to the E-ZPass account and deducted at time of each crossing.
Permit holders are exempt from the $100.00- $800.00 escort fee and may use any toll lane, including E-ZPass only lanes (subject to width restrictions.)
How it works
Patrons who are issued Annual Overweight Permits must pay their axle toll via E-ZPass using a tag that has been associated specifically with their Annual Overweight Permit. Each time that vehicle proceeds through the toll lane, the E-ZPass tag number is captured and saved for monthly billing of the $25.00 crossing fees (this amount is NOT debited from your E-ZPass account). Annual Overweight Permit applicants may be required to submit an amount equal to two months usage fees in advance.
*Permit holders less than 102” wide may cross anytime. Over-width vehicles may not cross during “Rush Hours”- defined as weekdays from 6 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM.
Exemptions
There may be occasions when vehicles that have been issued an Annual Overweight Permit cross a bridge below the maximum limit for the facility. In this case, the holder of an annual permit may obtain an exemption from the $25.00 crossing fee.
In order to obtain an exemption, the operator must use the most right-hand toll lane at the toll plaza, present the original permit to the toll collector and request an exemption from the Annual Overweight Permit crossing fee. Proof of vehicle gross weight may be required. Failure to use the proper lane and obtain an exemption at the time of crossing will result in the crossing fee being charged to the account associated with the annual permit.Exemptions are only granted when the driver is issued a colored receipt by the toll collector at the time of actual crossing.
Disputes
If you wish to dispute a crossing fee for which you claim an exemption, your receipt is the ONLY ACCEPTABLE PROOF that the exemption was granted. Operators of vehicles enrolled in the Annual Overweight Permit program are solely responsible for requesting and obtaining an exemption receipt at the time of crossing. Remember, exemptions are granted ONLY when the vehicle’s gross weight is not in excess of the bridge’s posted weight limit AND the corresponding original NYSBA Annual Overload Permit is presented.
Additional Information
Annual Permits will not be issued for vehicles with single axle weights over 25,000 lbs. or with a group of axles over 100,000 lbs. All axles spaced within 14 feet of an adjacent axle are considered a group.
If more than one vehicle is involved in a crossing, a 1,000 foot separation must be maintained between vehicles while on the bridge.
When crossing the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, travel is restricted to the center lane only and the speed limit is 40MPH.
Over-width vehicles are permitted to travel under a separate approval process. Contact the bridge office directly to schedule over-width loads.
To avoid delays, contact the appropriate bridge office at least 24 hours in advance of the crossing to determine if scheduled maintenance or construction will affect your trip.
Individual bridge information may be found here. (Contact Info)
ANY MISREPRESENTATION OR FAILURE TO ABIDE BY NYSBA RULES CONCERNING ANNUAL OVERLOAD PERMITS WILL RESULT IN REVOCATION OF THE PERMIT(S). REGULAR ESCORT FEES AND RULES WILL THEN APPLY FOR EACH CROSSING.
For each Annual Overweight Permit requested, return the application along with a $25.00 processing fee to the Operations Department. A separate application is required for each vehicle or vehicle combination. Applications received without the $25.00 fee will not be processed.
